Windows XP and reinstall still crashed

I have had windows XP for 6 years. Recentely the computer stops responding, the cursor hangs takes forever to load. If I got a virus why didnot Norton catch it and stop it. The only thing I kept getting was missing win32 file pci. something.
Reinstalled winxp tried to get update drivers that where missing, Installed Norton 360.5 and everything goes to crawling mode or will not reboot in a few hours. I even tried not reinstalling Norton, left it off the Internet. and still get the message files missing. After 10 -15 times of trying to reinstall all shut down. Cant do anything except take it to the trash can. I noticed a lot of people are having similiar difficulties. with XP If I by Windows 7 would this fix the slow problems.

will it fix the 'slow' problems?

Difficult to say, but on this machine, probably not. A 6 year old Windows XP system is likely not going to be compatible for Windows 7, and hunting for drivers could be a nightmare.

Since Norton 360 seems to slow it down the solution seems obvious to me. Dump Norton 360 and go for something else.

There are other threats besides viruses. Anti-virus scanner like Norton do a fairly good job with viruses, but no AV scanner will find all malware. For the rest we need to add to our arsenal of protection with anti-malware scanners.

when did you last give this computer a good clean, remove the dust and stuff from inside the case around the fans and other components?

I just took it apart about a month ago, and blew everything out, yes it was dusty. When it finally crashed and would not load anything the fan on the back went racing in high gear. I have heard using Norton for clean up does cause some problems like removing files it did not think I need. Thanks for the info on Windows 7 because, that was going to be my next attempt to try Windows 7. Drivers were the big issue when I re installed XP It would not find the ethernet drivers. Then was missing others, which is funny because I have not added anything to this original set up. I did find a site PerformerSoft Drivers for 30 $.

Could Dust have gotten on the hard drive itself? I thought it was a closed box.

You're right the hdd is sealed and enclosed, so no dust there.

I wonder again if this problem is not related to Norton 360. If you can fix that by uninstalling it, (may be a reinstall will be needed eventually, but if so don't install Norton), perhaps that will improve things?
