Will This Be The Death Of The New York Times?

They are going to charge for their website. I won't pay. I rarely go there anyway, usually if someone links to it.

NEW YORK (AP) -- The New York Times says it will start charging for access to its website and for the use of smart phone and tablet applications later this month in the U.S.

Beginning March 28, prices start at $15 for four weeks of full access to the website and the smart phone app.

Subscribers to the printed edition will keep free access to the website and apps. Others will be able to view 20 articles a month for free on the website and see the "Top News" section in the apps.

Newspapers are trying to increase digital revenue as online ad revenue, while growing, hasn't fully offset the declines in print.

A similar system will go into effect on Thursday in Canada, which will serve as a testing ground.

Not sure why you think fewer people getting something for free could be the death knell for a paper that's been around for over 100 years, survived the Great Depression, etc.

If you're just a casual viewer of their web editions like I am, this doesn't affect you.

In the UK, I assume it's the same in the US, the fall in demand for printed sheet news has been dramatic in the last 10 years and they are struggling to compete with online news sources.

Advertising revenue is down, and they are all considering online subscription versions, but there is little interest in it.

They are in trouble.
