Is USB2 installed?

I have an Intel D865GVHZ mobo on which I am trying to get WIN98SE fully functional. Add/Remove Software shows INTEL USB2 and another USB 2 software as being installed. Orangewise USB 2 software is also supposedly on the machine although not showing in the Add/Remove software. Device manager does not show any USB controllers supporting extended USB. Do I have USB 2 or not?

BTW, with regards to the common shut down problem, in my case it was installing Orangewise through the INTEL installer that caused the machine to hang on shut down. It isn't hanging now despite Orangewise being installed.

Thanks.

Dave

But a motherboard chipset driver could enable it. http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/sb/cs-008326.htm

Now I know many folk have forgotten all this stuff. So dive in.

If "USB2 Enhanced Host Controller" is not shown, you don't have USB2. Does W98SE support USB2?

Yes. Intel's mobo software has the Orangewise (?) USB2 driver in it. Unfortunately when I loaded that USB2 driver through the Intel installer the computer would no longer shut down. I've been seeking an alternate way of installing a USB2 driver in hopes that I could get USB2 working without running into the shut down problem.

I'd start over and check your install notes. Or do this install the old fashioned way (install Windows, then drivers for the machine.)

Sorry. My working computer is in one place and the computer I am working on is in another. I forgot the exact name of the USB 2 driver file. That is the reason I put the question mark after the name. I have been doing as you suggested, Windows then drivers, since I started trying to get the thing to work. Seems that the key is to keep reinstalling until it does work. It has been a bit dificult finding drivers for "unknown device".

I had a buddy in IT and it was always trying to get a clean device manager. I would get it all working and call it quits even with such a thing in the device manager.

It only took a decade for him to figure out that if everything works, move on.

Very true. Unfortunately I am faced with a situation where everything doesn't work.
