defaul email not set up

I have been trying to use Crag's List and when I click on the responce address I get the message "default email not set up correctly".

I have tried to look up how to set it up but I can't seem to get it done. Can someone give me the directions to set up my default email?

I am running Explorer 8, Windows 7, laptop, dsl with ATT.

Much thanks,

Gary

And how do you manage emails?

If you are using Web Mail then this cannot be done. Windows requires an 'application' to be set as default for email, but web access email is not an application.

However, if you are using some software installed on your computer to manage emails, eg Outlook, Windows Live Mail, Thunderbird, etc, you can set those applications as your default in the Start menu > Default Programs.

Hope that helps.

My email goes through Windows Internet Explorer?

I am pretty new to all of this. I hope I'm giving you the answer you were looking for.

Thanks,

I'm not sure my first reply went through.

My email goes through Windows Internet Explorer. I haven't set anything else up to manage email. I'm pretty new at this. I hope I'm answering your questions.

Thanks,

Gary

Web mail is not an email application, (program). When you manage your email through a browser, such as Internet Explorer, you are not using a dedicated email program but you are using a browser instead.

Windows 7, (as with Vista, Windows XP and so on), does not recognise a browser as a valid email program, and so you cannot select web mail as default. Microsoft is not planning on changing that as far as I know.

However, there are other options. If your email is provided by GMail or Yahoo Mail, they both have utilities, or browser add-ons, that will allow you to click an email link in a web page which will then allow you to use either of GMail or Yahoo Mail to send emails.

You haven't said who your email provider is.

If your email provider is your ISP, (Internet Service Provider), then another option is to use a dedicated email program such as Outlook, Windows Live Mail, Thunderbird, or so on, and 'install' that onto your computer had drive, then set that up to download and manage emails from your provider. When that is done, you can set that program as your default for web page email links. That doesn't stop you using the ISP's web access for emails, you can still do that. But now you would also be able to send emails when clicking email links in web pages.

Those are the (limited) options.

Thanks for your help...............!!

My email provider is ATT........I use their DSL service.

Does all of this mean that I need to find a secondary emailprovder? If so, can you tell me how to set it up?

Much thanks,

Gary

And before we go on, make sure you read Kees' suggestion below. It's an very good workaround in these cases.

I'm not sure why you think you need a different, or secondary email provider. You can still use AT&T with the method I suggested above.

But again, Kees' workaround solves this for you.

Ithink I understand.........I should copy and paste the email address on the Craig's List page on the email address and take it from there?

It's possible that if you copy and paste the address starts with mailto:
In that case, that's 7 times the delete-key to press.

To change
mailto:myself@cnet.com
to
myself@cnet.com
press delete-key 7 times. First time deletes the m, second time the a and seventh time the :

Don't do that. Just copy/paste it into the to-address field of a new mail you create in your mail program and you can mail them.
